Toastmasters Club
Toastmasters Club

QUICK FACTS:
We meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month normally at 6:45 pm at The College Church, 58 Pomeroy Terrace, Northampton, MA. (This gives us 15 minutes to settle in, greet friends, get a snack, and be ready to start our business meeting promptly at 7:00pm.)
Our next club meeting is on Wednesday, February 15th

MEMBERS: Be sure to bring your Competent Leadership Manual with you each time we gather—get credit for the work you do in the meeting!
CLUB NEWS:
  • Spring Speech Contests:  It is never too early to start planning your participation in the Tall Tales and/or International speech contests.  The entire rulebook can be found at www.toastmasters.org/rulebook.aspx, and more training is available for any role, but here are some "quick and dirty tips":
    • Contest speech material must be essentially original and all quotations noted as such
    • Contestant must be a member in good standing of a club in good standing
      • International contest:  contestant must have completed a minimum of 6 competent communicator manual speeches
      • Tall Tales contest:  any member is eligible to compete.
    • Contestants have a 30 second grace period on either side of minimum and maximum time
      • International contest:  minimum 5 minutes; maximum 7 minutes
      • Tall Tales contest: minimum 3 minutes; maximum 5 minutes
    • In addition to contestants we need the following functionaries:
      • Contest Chair - oversees everything leading up to the contest, recruits functionaries, orders materials, appoints and works with publicity chair
      • Contest Master - prepares contest agenda, briefs contestants prior to contest, runs the program on contest night similar to a Toastmaster in a regular club meeting, interviews contestants after the contest.
      • Chief Judge - verify speaker eligibility, briefs judges for each contest, brief timers & counters, oversees calculations of results
      • Judges (3 or more) - evaluates contests according to speech contest criteria
      • Timer (2) - time speeches and report to Chief Judge
      • Counter (2 or more) - calculates final scores from judges ballots

  • A New Club is Forming! A group of students at UMass Amherst have been working to form a new club focusing on the needs of students in the Five College Area. Club membership will be open to Five College students, faculty and staff, but non-college-affiliated Toastmasters are more than welcome to help get them started.
Speakeasy will continue to provide this new club with sponsors (Cathie McCoy) and mentors (Bryan Bridges and ??). In addition, the new club would welcome "seasoned" Toastmasters to help get them off the ground by providing Point of Emphasis training. (Note: Conducting these training modules can help satisfy the requirements of the Advanced Communication and Leadership awards!) If you are interested in being one of these resources, please speak to Bryan Bridges.
  • Hampshire Life Put Us on the Cover! In January 2011, our club was visited by a reporter and photographer from the Daily Hampshire Gazette for a cover story on public speaking. You can read this excellent article here. Thanks to Mike Finn, our Vice President of Public Relations for making this happen after years of reaching out to the local media!

TOASTMASTERS PSA:

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped millions of men and women become more confident in front of an audience. Our network of clubs and their learn-by-doing program are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader. Why pay thousands of dollars for a seminar when you can join a Toastmasters club for a fraction of the cost and have fun in the process?

Toastmasters will give you the skills and confidence you need to effectively express yourself in any situation. Whether you are a professional, student, stay-at-home parent or retiree, Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. By learning to effectively formulate and express your ideas, you open an entirely new world of possibilities. You’ll be more persuasive and confident when giving presentations, and you’ll improve your one-on-one dealings with others.

Don’t worry! Everyone in a Toastmasters club was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment. And you’ll love the applause! Constructive evaluation is the heart of the Toastmasters program. Each time you give a prepared speech, an evaluator will point out strengths and suggest improvements. At first you’ll be applauded for your effort; later you’ll be applauded for your skill.
